Marangu Route

6 Days | 5 Nights

Overview

Marangu route a.k.a. Coca Cola route, is the easiest route on Mount Kilimanjaro.

The trek begins in the south-east area of the mountain at Marangu Gate. The route takes five days minimum to complete, although six days is more practical and recommended. We have had a client who did it for a day and a half.

The sleeping huts along the route are structures with a dining hall and bunk beds, equipped with mattresses and pillows.

This is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro that ascend and descent is done on the same path.

Hike through rain-forest from the park gate (6000 ft) to Mandara Hut (9000 ft),taking about 4 hours. In the mid-day hour we shall stop to enjoy our quick delicious picnic lunch boxes. Our first night on the mountain will be spent at Mandara Hut.

This leg should take 5 to 6 hrs. In the mid-day hour we shall stop to enjoy our delicious picnic lunch boxes. Views of Mawenzi are amazing. The summit of Kibo can be seen from Horombo Hut. Arrive at Horombo Hut at about 3PM. You will then have plenty of time to rest, and prepare for dinner.

Early wake up would be ideal to have some great photos of the sunrise. After breakfast proceed to Kibo Hut (15,500 ft). The first half of the day’s hike traverses the upper heath land while the second half crosses the vast saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo. The saddle is an alpine desert that resembles a lunar landscape.

At this point you will already be at the high altitude so be careful with altitude sickness.

The day’s hike should take 6 to 7 hours, with a quick stop to enjoy our delicious picnic lunch boxes. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, it is advisable that you go to the bed as early as you can, since the start to the summit will start as early as 1am.

Our destination today is the Uhuru Peak. Wake up early at around 1am and sip a cup of coffee and biscuits ready for the summit ascent. This part of the hike is carried out during the early hours of the morning so as to reach Uhuru Peak during sunrise.

You will be greeted by the views of the crater from Gilman’s Point because it is on the Crater Rim. Another 2 hours of hiking brings you to Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft) at about 8:30 am. From here you will descend back to Kibo Hut for refreshments, then collect your personal items and cross the saddle to Horombo Hut where you will spend the night.
