Lake Eyasi

Home of the Hadzabe bushmen.

Overview

Lake Eyasi is located between the Great Rift Valley and the Kidero mountains; the lake covers an area of approximately 1,050 square kilometres. The main attraction around Lake Eyasi is the Hadzabe bushmen and the Datoga pastoralists. The Hadzabe bushmen have lived in the area for thousands of years and still cling to their traditional way of life; they are kind people who will kindly show you where they live and how they hunt. They live in caves and only wear skin to cover their private parts. Hadzabe men are skilled hunters while women and children are gatherers of fruits and roots which they use to supplement their diet.

On the other hand, the Datoga are pastoral nomads and herdsmen; their culture resembles that of the Maasai. Apart from being pastoralists, the Datoga are also blacksmiths; they make knives and arrowheads which they trade with the Hadzabe bushmen.

The weather in this region is nearly always very hot and intense, but this is what makes it a truly authentic African experience. Lake Eyasi is also a great place to watch birds; you will see both resident and migratory birds feeding on the soda lake.
