Beyond the Northern Circuit: Why Ruaha and Nyerere Belong on Your Safari List

Remote, wild and wonderfully uncrowded, southern Tanzania offers a completely different rhythm of safari — from walking and boating to some of Africa's most exciting predator viewing.

Most first-time visitors to Tanzania head north — to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. They are iconic for good reason. But for travellers searching for something truly different, the south offers wilderness on a scale that feels almost untouched.

Ruaha and Nyerere are two of Tanzania's great southern wilderness areas. Visitor numbers are low, the landscapes are vast and dramatic, and the experiences on offer — walking, boating and fly-camping — bring you closer to the wild in ways a vehicle alone cannot.

Ruaha: wild, remote, untamed

Ruaha is one of Tanzania's largest national parks, a rugged land of baobabs, rocky hills and sand rivers, cut through by the Great Ruaha River. It sits where East and Southern African ecosystems meet, so you may see species from both — including greater and lesser kudu, which are a special sighting here.

Ruaha is also known for its predators. Large lion prides, leopard in the riverine woodland, cheetah on the open plains and, with a little luck, packs of African wild dog. The real magic, though, is the feeling of finding them without another vehicle in sight.

Nyerere: where wilderness meets water

Nyerere National Park was established in 2019 from the northern part of the former Selous Game Reserve, long celebrated as one of Africa's great wilderness areas. Its character is shaped by the Rufiji River and a network of lakes, channels and lagoons.

This is the place for a boat safari — gliding past hippos, crocodiles and elephants drinking at the water's edge, with exceptional birdlife all around. Walking safaris with expert guides, where available, reveal the details of the bush at the pace it deserves, and Nyerere is one of the great strongholds of the African wild dog.

Experiences you won't find on every safari

  • Walking safaris — on foot with an armed ranger and expert guide, discovering tracks, plants and the small wonders of the bush.
  • Boat safaris — a completely different perspective on wildlife, especially at golden hour.
  • Fly-camping — a night or two in a simple camp beneath the stars, far from the main lodge.
  • Night drives — in areas where they are permitted, revealing the nocturnal side of the wild.

When to go

The dry season, roughly June to October, is the classic time to visit both parks. As water becomes scarce, wildlife concentrates along the rivers and remaining water sources, vegetation thins and sightings are excellent. Some camps close during the heaviest rains, so timing matters when planning a southern safari.

Getting there

Both parks are best reached by light aircraft. Scheduled and private flights connect them with Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and the northern circuit, so it is easy to combine the south with other regions — or to finish your journey on the beach.

A sample southern journey

A beautifully balanced itinerary might combine four nights in Ruaha for predators and walking, three or four nights in Nyerere for boat safaris and lakeside life, and a few unhurried days on Zanzibar to finish. For returning safari-goers, pairing the south with the Serengeti offers the best of both worlds.

Our view

Southern Tanzania rewards travellers who value space, authenticity and a sense of discovery. If you have already experienced the north — or simply want your safari to feel like no one else's — Ruaha and Nyerere may be exactly what you are looking for.
