Turquoise water and white sand along the Zanzibar coast

Bush to Beach: How to Plan the Perfect Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Escape

From the Serengeti to the Indian Ocean — our guide to pacing, timing and the small details that turn a safari and beach holiday into an unforgettable honeymoon or celebration.

After days of early starts, dusty tracks and extraordinary wildlife, there is something deeply satisfying about trading the sounds of the bush for the rhythm of the Indian Ocean. A safari followed by a few days on Zanzibar is one of the world's great travel combinations — and with the right planning, it feels effortless.

Why combine safari and beach?

A safari is exhilarating, emotional and wonderfully busy. Zanzibar offers the perfect counterpoint: warm turquoise water, white sand, fascinating history and time to reflect on everything you have seen. For honeymooners and those celebrating a special occasion, it is the ideal balance of adventure and rest.

Getting the pacing right

We usually recommend six to eight nights on safari followed by four or five nights on the coast. That allows time to settle into two or three safari areas without rushing, and enough beach days to genuinely unwind. Ending with the beach — rather than starting with it — means you finish your journey relaxed and restored.

Your safari should end as beautifully as it begins.

Getting from the bush to the beach

Scheduled light-aircraft flights connect the Serengeti and other parks with Zanzibar, sometimes via Arusha. Flying saves a long journey and adds a spectacular aerial view of the landscapes you have just explored.

A note on luggage: light aircraft usually have strict baggage limits — typically around 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft-sided bags. We can arrange for any extra luggage to be stored or sent ahead to the coast.

When to go

The long dry season from June to October is a superb time for both safari and beach. December to February is also lovely — warm and generally dry on the coast, and calving season in the southern Serengeti. The long rains, usually around April and May, bring heavier showers, and some beach properties close for part of this period.

Choosing where to stay on Zanzibar

Zanzibar's coastlines each have their own character. Some areas have dramatic tides that reveal sandbanks and rock pools at low tide; others, particularly in the north, are better for swimming at all times of day. For privacy and romance, we favour secluded boutique retreats and villas with plunge pools, attentive service and a sense of place.

Experiences beyond the beach

  • Historic Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of carved doorways, narrow lanes, markets and Swahili, Arab, Indian and European influences, best explored with a knowledgeable local guide.
  • A spice farm visit — discover the cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla that earned Zanzibar its name as the Spice Island.
  • A sunset dhow cruise — sail a traditional wooden dhow as the sky turns gold.
  • Snorkelling and sandbanks — explore coral reefs and picnic on sandbanks that appear with the tide.
  • Or simply do nothing at all — a hammock, the shade of a palm and nowhere you need to be.

Honeymoon touches we love

A private bush dinner beneath the stars. A sundowner on a quiet hill with no one else in sight. A hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti at dawn. A secluded suite with a plunge pool and an ocean view. These are the moments that turn a holiday into a lifelong memory — and we take care of every one of them discreetly.

Practical tips

  • Pack light, breathable layers for safari and modest clothing for Stone Town.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and good sunglasses.
  • Speak to your doctor or a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention well before you travel.
  • Check visa and passport requirements for Tanzania, including any entry rules for Zanzibar.
